Capt. Ralph Hawkins of Hollywood South Florida has been leaving the dock at 2 a.m. and doing quite well. His past three morning trips all have produced swordfish, including a 371.26-pounder Wednesday.
"I've found that, for some reason, these fish, I don't know what it is, they don't bite as good from midnight to 2 a.m. as they do when the sun goes down and when the sun comes up," Hawkins said.

Hawkins runs daytime offshore charters and nighttime swordfish charters ((954) 547-1813) on his 32-foot Sea craft Out Of Control. He also helps skipper the family drift boat Sea Legs in Hollywood, South Florida.
Most South Florida swordfish anglers head out late in the afternoon and try to have their lines in the water by dusk.If they catch a fish or two right off the bat, they can be back home in time to catch the last few innings of the Marlins' game.
If they don't hook up, they usually give up by 1 or 2 a.m.
Hawkins came up with idea of fishing in the morning last weekend after a tough Saturday night competing in the Fort Lauderdale Swordfish Tournament.
"The bite was real slow," Hawkins said."The tournament ended at 2 o'clock, we stayed out until 4 and we got two fish between 3 and 4 o'clock.Since we didn't catch any fish in the tournament, we had planned on coming back in later and trolling for dolphin."
Hawkins, who has been using little bonito for bait, got a 68-inch swordfish and a 73-inc her last Sunday morning.Monday morning his charter caught a 61-inc her and had two other "decent" fish on, but one broke off and the other was apparently wrapped in the leader and got unwrapped because the hook came back with the bait.
After that Hawkins, who was recently married to his wife, Pamela, took out his father-in-law, Bruce Kling, of New York, and Kling's friend, Jimmy Ludwig.
...
"We left the dock at 2, started fishing at 3 and got a bite between 3:30 and 4," Hawkins said, adding that the fish was more than 200 pounds.
...
"After the first trip, Bruce was saying his daughter married into the right family," Hawkins said with a laugh. read more

Largest Amber Jack Seen In Ages Caught Off Hollywood Beach
I took three friends out on a trip with Capt. Ralph on Wed. 2/17/10. Capt. Ralph told me that the Sail Fish bite had slowed down, and it was evident listening to the talk on the radio. None of the boats were hooking up. After working the wrecks for a while, with little current, and no bites, Capt. Ralph put up the kites. Within 15 minutes we had a ten foot T-Head shark circling the goggle eyes. He tasted one, but Capt. Ralph cound not entice him to the boat to take the speedo on the wire leader. He came within 15 feet of the boat and disappeared.
After a while Capt. Ralph pulled in the kites and hit another wreck. We hooked up back, to back, to back, with three Amberjacks going to 40 pounds. Just when it seemed as though the bite was over, the rod bent again and Devon was fighting a fish for an unusually long time. Finally, colored appeared in the water and I couldn't belive my eyes. At the end of the leader was the largest Amberjcak I had ever seen. Capt. Ralph grabbed the leader and hoisted it into the boat. It was every bit of 100 pounds. My three buddies were happy with the trip and asking when we were going fishing again. Capt. Ralph, you did it again. Nice job, and thank you so much!
